The Celebration of Holy Communion
THINKINGABOUTTHESACRAMENTOFTHEMEAL: Eucharist, meaning "thanksgiving" is the most widely used designation of the Sacrament of the Meal. Other ways of describing the meal are "Lord's Supper or "Holy Communion." The name "Lord's Supper" evokes the sense of fellowship enjoyed by the people of God with one another as they gather at Table with Christ, their host. "Holy Communion" accents the congregation's intimate spiritual relation with Christ whose presence is given in the Sacrament.
The specific origin of the Eucharist is the meal which Jesus ate with his desciples in the upper room on the night of his betrayal, commonly called the Last Supper. However, the church's Eucharist has also been shaped by other meals Jesus shared with his disciples and others, including, for example, the feeding of the five thousand, and meals eaten with persons publicly identified as sinners. Thanksgiving is the common element in these meals.
