From Pancakes to Ashes

The Lenten Journey Begins

In Unity:  Pencader Presbyterians with Elizabeth AME

Seldom in the history of Christendom has Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday been observed on the same day, but that’s exactly what is planned at Pencader on Wednesday, February 17th for members and friends of Pencader Presbyterian and Elizabeth AME churches. This unique and recently established liturgical tradition will begin with a Pancake Supper in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Pancakes, tasty syrups, sausage, fruit and beverages, prepared and served by the Wonderful Wednesdays’ children and leaders will be enjoyed by all.

At 7:00 the lights will dim and for 35 minutes with music, hymns, scripture and reflection we will begin our journey into Lent, leading us eventually to Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and glorious Easter morning!

Definitions:  Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the shriving (confession and absolution) that Anglo-Saxon Christians were expected to participate in immediately before Lent. The Pennsylvania Dutch tradition calls this Fastnacht Day after a type of doughnut made of all the sweets and other tasty items in the household and then consumed on Fat Tuesday so that no one would be tempted during the Lenten Fast.

A personal note: My father was Pennsylvania German, so in the Undercuffler household, we called this Fastnacht Day, and we ate Pancakes. My dad said he never met a Fastnacht he liked.  Perhaps someone will introduce us to some really good Fastnachs, but till then, Pencader’s celebration will settle for delicious pancakes. Some with tasty add-ins.  And yes, bring along some friends.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. It occurs forty-six days before Easter, but Lent is nevertheless considered forty days long, because Sundays in this period are not counted as days of penance. (Sunday worship always celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ) For the Ash Wednesday service, worshippers may choose to be marked by the minister with black ashes in the shape of a cross. The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebration and mixing them with olive oil.

To enrich our Lenten Journey there will be an Adult Study of the Parables of Jesus.  The class will begin Sunday, February 21 and continue for six Sundays through Palm Sunday. The study will meet in the Annex from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

A SPECIAL INVITATION -- members and friends of Pencader are invited to a mid-week Lenten Bible Study led by Rev. Terry Vodery, associate pastor of Elizabeth AME church.  Ms. Vodery’s Lenten study will begin Wednesday, February 24, from 7- 8 p.m. in the Pencader sanctuary.

In addition, there is a Lenten Devotional guide, Praying Through Lent with Heart, Soul, Mind and Body.  Find your copy on the entrance table.

Monday evening, February 22, 7 p.m. This gathering is to share tips about garden planning, soil preparation, and gardening in general. We will have special guests. What is in Pencader Church's DNA?

  • We are a gracious, hospitable people – and we extend our welcome to a broadening range of people.
  • Our primary work is to worship God.  To glorify God and to enjoy God forever.  Our simple, lovely sanctuary is dedicated to our worship, but whether we worship there – or in the Fellowship Hall during the summer months – we worship God with joy, rich thanksgiving and conviction.
  • We build friendships with our neighbors, beginning with those close to our church home and extending to the ends of the earth, helping discover and create a more abundant life, peace with justice for all people.
  • We care for children.  The Pencader Family Album reveals children and youth – parents and friends singing and studying – and engaged in mission nearby and in Washington, DC.
  • We seek ways that our Pencader buildings may be a resource for rich congregational and community life.  Our grand old church building is a blessing from our ancestors, and in our DNA is commitment to use this special place not just for ourselves, but for the community, as well.

Come Grow with Us!
