Pencader Community Garden
We're planning to expand the garden - more plots, more sizes,
plus one large plot dedicated to a communal effort
to grow food for the hungry!
So use the winter to plan for the spring!
Call 302.383.2564 for more information.
As we work on our plans, we're looking for ideas, suggestions and comments. We'd like to hear about your experience with the garden this year.
-
What worked out the best for you?
-
Is there anything that would have made the gardening experience more enjoyable?
-
Would you be interested in having a larger plot next year? What size?
-
Are you interested in helping to keep the garden going and moving forward?
In 2011, all lots were 10’ x 10’ and were available for only $25/plot.
Garden Expansion:
The expansion of the garden has been made possible by the receipt of a grant from the West Legacy Trust. Lance provided price estimates for the materials we would need for the expansion: fencing, plot dividers, plowing and tilling, water connection, etc. Paths on all four sides of the plots will be incorporated. Ultimately, the expansion would provide 58 plots of various sizes compared to the current 18, with a special garden area for children. It’s a big plan that we’re making more manageable by doing it in stages, one area of the garden at a time. The plots we're currently planning to have when the project is complete are listed below. Plot prices will be set according to size of the plot.
-
18 plots - 10'x10’ (original garden)
-
12 plots - 10'x15’
-
12 plots - 15x20’
-
6 plots - 20'x20’
-
10 remaining plots - some 8'x12’ and some 12'x13’
Garden Notes:
For only $20 you can get a compost bin to hold your autumn leaves from the Cooperative Extension at UD. (Call their office at 302.831.2506 or see their website at http://ag.udel.edu/extension/ncc/). The first date of their Community Garden Workshop Series has already been set, so mark Feb. 2, 2012 on your calendar and keep watch for more information.
Pencader Community Festival
We're thinking of holding a community festival (in the spring?) to help us re-connect with our neighbors. Below are some of the ideas that are being considered. All you need to do in order to add your suggestions to the list is speak to any of Pencader's elders!
1. Advertising of Festival to businesses, etc. mentioned above
2. Applications for next year--early registration discount ??
3. Trifold with pictures, descriptive info
4. Yard/White Elephant Sale
5. Food items made from garden produce
